Recap and recall

Show the Presentation: High five. In pairs, ask learners to think about how they made their Maya drawings to represent themselves in the last lesson. If needed, give each learner their drawings from Lesson 2: Symbolic art.

Differentiation

Learners needing support

  • Could be guided with the masking tape to mark out their chosen word, helping them apply and remove it correctly.
  • Could use a pencil grip or writing slope to help with shading, making it easier to control the charcoal when creating tones.

Learners working at a stretch

  • Could experiment with different techniques for creating darker and lighter areas, such as varying pressure on the charcoal or using different marks (cross-hatching, blending).
  • Should refine their contrasts, going back and adding more dark or light areas where needed to create a more realistic 3D effect.
  • Could experiment with the direction of light to create more dramatic shadows or highlights, adding depth to their work.
