Making connections units offer an opportunity to bring the different elements of art together to create a project piece. This unit focuses on composition and working with a variety of art materials to explore texture. Based on the theme of 'The seaside', the unit can be adapted to other topics.

Unit 6: Making connections: Landscapes using different media
Unit outcomes
Learners who are secure will be able to:
- Use scissors safely and independently to cut complex shapes.
- Create a seaside scene using shapes.
- Identify different textures in a scene.
- Create different shades.
- Identify and mix colours used in artworks.
- Use a paintbrush to apply colours carefully.
- Use objects and materials to add detail to artwork.

Lesson 1: Composition
- To identify the key features of a landscape.
Lesson 2: Beach textures
- To explore different textures.
Lesson 3: Shades and colours of the sea
- To paint using different shades.
Lesson 4: Painting over texture
- To reproduce and apply an artist’s colour range to their own work.
Lesson 5: Beach collage
- To create detail using controlled painting and other materials and objects.
