Painting with colour

This Art and design video guides learners through a hands-on painting activity inspired by Jasper Johns’s Zero to Nine. Children begin by drawing the numbers 0 to 9 on an A3 sheet and then use primary colours—red, yellow and blue—to paint inside the shapes. They are shown how to mix these colours to create secondary ones—green, orange and purple—and apply them using thick brushstrokes in the impasto style.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It supports learners in building their confidence with colour mixing and paint application while encouraging patience, control and creativity. By exploring primary and secondary colours through expressive painting, children begin to understand how artists can use colour and texture to make an impact.
