Exploring wool as art
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a lesson focused on wool wrapping, the first in a series of fibre art techniques explored throughout the unit. Learners experiment with wrapping yarn around objects, learning a practical skill that encourages creativity and fine motor development. The lesson also introduces the work of artists Judith Scott and Cecilia Vicuña, whose textile-based practices blur the boundaries between art and craft, sparking rich discussion around material use and meaning.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). As part of the Craft and design: Woven wonders unit, this lesson helps teachers feel confident in guiding learners through hands-on craft activities that promote experimentation, reflection and self-expression. As learners begin to explore fibre art, they build skills and ideas that will later contribute to a collaborative or individual woven artwork, while deepening their understanding of what art can be.
