Beach texture

This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a lesson focused on exploring texture through sensory experience and creative materials. Using a painting by Van Gogh as a starting point, children use their senses and imagination to consider what different elements—such as the sea, sand and breeze—might feel like. They then use a range of materials to represent those textures, applying them to a photocopy of the artwork to create a tactile response.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps teachers feel confident leading multisensory, expressive activities that encourage children to experiment with materials and justify their creative choices. As part of the Making connections: Landscapes using different media unit, this lesson builds on learners’ understanding of how texture can be used to bring landscapes to life.
