Shades and colours of the sea

This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a lesson focused on mixing and applying paint to create backgrounds for a seaside landscape. Building on earlier work, children explore how to match and create shades inspired by the colours used in famous artworks. The lesson guides teachers in supporting learners to experiment with lightening and darkening blue—one of the more challenging primary colours—and to apply their paint smoothly and carefully.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps teachers feel confident in teaching foundational painting skills, encouraging learners to observe closely, mix colours with control, and reflect on their work. As part of the Making connections: Landscapes using different media unit, this lesson strengthens children’s understanding of colour, shade and artistic decision-making.
