Supporting observational drawing

This Art and design video supports teachers in guiding learners through the first of two lessons focused on drawing from observation. Children apply their knowledge of tone and texture by closely studying a real-life object—such as a toy—and sketching it in their sketchbooks. The video encourages careful observation, use of shape to build structure, and a lighter pencil touch to allow for refining and revisiting over time.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps teachers feel confident leading observational drawing sessions that encourage deeper looking, patient mark-making and reflection. As part of the Drawing: Tone and texture unit, this lesson allows children to put key skills into practice, helping them move towards more expressive and realistic artwork.
