Developing drawings through observation

This Art and design video guides learners through the process of sketching and refining a drawing from observation. They begin by identifying simple shapes in the object they are drawing, then build on their sketch with more accurate lines and details. The video encourages close looking, careful mark making and the use of tone and texture to bring the drawing to life.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Stage 2 Drawing: Tone and texture unit, this lesson encourages children to observe, refine and reflect, just like real artists. It helps learners build confidence in drawing from real life, using their knowledge of shading and texture to improve accuracy and expression.
