Clay modelling techniques
This Art and design video supports teachers in introducing learners to basic clay techniques. Children explore how to shape, roll and flatten clay using their hands, tools and everyday objects. They learn how to create surface marks and textures using items like buttons, Lego bricks and string, and begin to understand how varying pressure can produce different effects. The video offers practical tips for preparing materials and supporting children’s first experiences with clay.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps teachers feel confident guiding early sculptural exploration, with a focus on skill-building and creativity. As part of the Sculpture and 3D: Clay houses unit, this lesson encourages children to become familiar with clay as a medium and sets the foundation for more structured projects in the following sessions.
