Turning maps into 3D art

This Art and design video guides learners as they transform their two-dimensional map drawings into imaginative three-dimensional relief maps. Using cardboard, paper, string, foil and other materials, learners build up layers and textures to represent features such as roads, rivers, buildings or mountains. They are encouraged to experiment with colour and composition while thinking creatively about how to turn a flat map into a three-dimensional art piece.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Stage 2 Craft and design: Map it out unit, this lesson helps learners develop spatial awareness and mixed-media skills through hands-on exploration. It builds on their artist’s map to create a vibrant three-dimensional relief piece that can be displayed individually or as part of a collaborative class map.
