Stained glass

This Art and design video supports teachers in guiding learners through a creative process that transforms a section of their map drawing into an abstract stained glass–style artwork. Inspired by artists who use maps in imaginative ways, children explore colour, shape and composition as they layer tissue or cellophane on transparent material. The lesson culminates in a collaborative display that reimagines their maps through abstraction.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps teachers confidently lead mixed-media projects while encouraging learners to explore abstraction, colour blending and design thinking. As part of the Craft and design: Map it Out unit, this lesson challenges pupils to move from representation to creative interpretation in a collaborative, visually impactful piece.
