Drawing for sculpture

This Art and design video supports teachers in introducing the concepts of positive and negative space to help learners explore abstraction in sculpture. Learners examine playground structures, identifying key shapes and drawing what they see. They practise drawing positive shapes (the object itself), negative shapes (the space around and between forms), and both together to develop spatial awareness. These drawings inform their sculpture plans for the next lesson.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. As part of the Abstract shape and space unit, this lesson helps learners build confidence in observation, composition and abstract thinking.
