Expressing ideas with abstract art
This Art and design video supports teachers in guiding learners through an exploration of abstract painting inspired by contemporary artist Fiona Rae. The lesson focuses on developing visual literacy through discussion, interpretation and personal response. Learners recreate a composition based on Rae’s work, using colour, line and shape to reflect the themes and moods identified in their analysis. Teachers are encouraged to facilitate group discussion and reinforce key formal elements such as composition and colour choice.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Painting and mixed media: Artist study unit, this lesson promotes critical thinking and expressive creativity through abstraction and artistic interpretation.
