Designing a symbolic self-portrait
This Art and design video guides learners as they create a symbolic self-portrait inspired by the Maya belief in spirit companions. Learners explore how colours, patterns and symbols can express identity, sketching and designing a personalised tile filled with imagery that reflects their traits, interests, and personal symbolism. They are encouraged to make creative choices in composition, tools, and mark making techniques.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Stage 6 Making connections: Maya art unit, this lesson helps learners express individuality while exploring cultural and artistic traditions.
