Primary to secondary colours
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering an introductory lesson on colour. It introduces learners to basic colour theory by exploring how the three primary colours, red, blue and yellow, can be combined to create secondary colours. Through a playful, hands-on activity using colourful modelling dough, learners work in pairs to mix and discover new colours for themselves.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). As part of the Painting and mixed media: Colour splash unit, this lesson helps teachers feel confident in leading interactive lessons that build foundational knowledge of colour mixing. By making and observing secondary colours tactilely, this unit encourages collaboration, curiosity and a deeper understanding of how colours relate to one another.
