Lesson 1: Homes in space

Learning that the International Space Station (ISS) is home for astronauts in space; discovering how data is used to ensure that human needs are met on the ISS.

Lesson 1: Space imagery and retrofuturism

Finding out about the 'Space race' era and how it influenced art and design; learning the term 'retrofuturism' and evaluating images using knowledge of the formal elements.

Lesson 2: Drawing decisions

Exploring art created using different processes and considering artist decisions; using visual journals to explore drawing through line, tone, shape and textures; experimenting with materials and tools.

Lesson 3: Warmer, colder

Learning that the ISS uses sensor monitors to collect data and ensure the astronauts are safe and healthy; discovering how to read thermometers; designing a display to show data.

Lesson 3: Teis Albers

Gaining inspiration from Teis Albers' piece 'Moonwalk'; considering how drawing can be developed through printmaking and creating a collagraph printing plate.

Lesson 4: Experiments in space

Learning what plants need to grow and creating an algorithm for growing a plant in space, including the use of sensors to collect vital data.

Lesson 4: A vision of the future

Thinking about what the future might look like; planning futuristic artworks and printing a background using collagraph plates made in the previous lesson.

Lesson 5: Goldilocks planets

Using an understanding of what is required to support human life by exploring a range of both real and fictitious planets, interpreting data to decide whether they might be habitable.

Lesson 5: Revisiting ideas

Reflecting on and revisiting ideas; creating a final piece by drawing their vision of the future onto the collagraph printed backgrounds.
