Our approach
This printable PDF document provides a detailed overview of the Kapow Art and design scheme of work, designed to support the teaching of the Cambridge Primary Art & Design curriculum across Stages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. It helps teachers confidently deliver a well-structured, engaging and aligned art scheme.
What does Kapow’s Art and design long-term plan contain?
The long-term plan outlines the units and objectives covered in Art and design.
It covers the requirements of the Cambridge Primary Art & Design curriculum, offers guidance on assessment and provides information to support the implementation of the scheme within your school setting.
Can I adapt the long-term plan?
All schools have different needs. As such, units 1-4 in all stages can be taught in different orders or moved to align with your school’s specific requirements.
It is advised that Unit 5 (Art and design skills) and Unit 6 (Making connections) are taught towards the end of the year as they are designed to support learners in consolidating and applying skills from previous units.
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a comprehensive introduction to a range of drawing materials, focusing on their properties, uses and classroom suitability. From pencils and graphite sticks to charcoal, wax crayons, oil pastels and soft pastels, the video explores how each medium can support children’s growing understanding of tone, texture and mark making.
This Art and design video guides learners through the final steps of completing their seaside landscape collages.
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering the final lesson of the unit, where children complete their seaside collages by adding painted objects and textured details. Building on their painted backgrounds from earlier lessons, learners now paint their cut-out seaside elements, paying attention to highlights, features and fine details using smaller brushes. The video also encourages creative embellishments using materials such as buttons, fabric and cotton wool.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps teachers feel confident bringing together composition, texture and colour in a celebratory final piece. As part of the Making connections: Landscapes using different media unit, this lesson allows learners to consolidate their artistic choices and take pride in completing and sharing their finished work.
Art and design, Stage 1, Unit 6: Making connections: Landscapes using different media, Lesson 5: Beach Collage
This Art and design video supports teachers in guiding learners through the process of painting over textured collages inspired by Van Gogh’s artwork. The lesson focuses on observation, colour mixing and careful application using both brushes and sponges for textured areas.
This Art and design video teaches learners how to mix and apply different shades of green using primary colours. Learners experiment with combining various blues and yellows to create at least five unique shades, recording the colour combinations they use.
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a lesson focused on mixing and applying paint to create backgrounds for a seaside landscape. The lesson guides teachers in supporting learners to experiment with lightening and darkening blue, one of the more challenging primary colours, and to apply their paint smoothly and carefully.
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a lesson focused on exploring texture through sensory experience and creative materials. Using a painting by Van Gogh as a starting point, learners then use a range of materials to represent textures, applying them to a photocopy of the artwork to create a tactile response.
This Art and design video introduces learners to the concept of composition by guiding them through the creation of a beach collage.
