This Art and design video supports teachers in guiding learners through the process of creating detailed botanical drawings. Children focus on a small section of a real flower, enlarging and refining their sketch using darker pencil, pen or ink. The video also encourages learners to observe closely, use shading techniques to show tone and optionally add delicate watercolour washes to suggest colour and form.
year: Stage 3
Learner video: Making zines
This Art and design video demonstrates how to make a zine using a single folded and cut sheet of paper. The activity encourages learners to be inventive with design materials and layout while sharing what they have learned about Ancient Egyptian art through creative presentation.
Teacher video: Making zines
This Art and design video supports teachers in guiding learners through the process of creating a handmade zine, which is a small book made from folding and cutting a single sheet of paper. Building on their knowledge of Ancient Egyptian art, learners express their personal responses through images, patterns and writing.
Art and design: Long-term plan
Our approach
This printable PDF document provides a detailed overview of the Kapow Art and design scheme of work, designed to support the teaching of the Cambridge Primary Art & Design curriculum across Stages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. It helps teachers confidently deliver a well-structured, engaging and aligned art scheme.
What does Kapow’s Art and design long-term plan contain?
The long-term plan outlines the units and objectives covered in Art and design.
It covers the requirements of the Cambridge Primary Art & Design curriculum, offers guidance on assessment and provides information to support the implementation of the scheme within your school setting.
Can I adapt the long-term plan?
All schools have different needs. As such, units 1-4 in all stages can be taught in different orders or moved to align with your school’s specific requirements.
It is advised that Unit 5 (Art and design skills) and Unit 6 (Making connections) are taught towards the end of the year as they are designed to support learners in consolidating and applying skills from previous units.
Vocabulary display – Art and design S3: Art and design skills
This unit vocabulary includes keywords from the Stage 3 unit Art and design skills and additional unit-specific words that may be helpful in a display.
Learner video: Egyptian scroll making
This Art and design video demonstrates how to transfer an Ancient Egyptian design onto handmade papyrus-style paper. The activity encourages learners to plan layout and scale add colour pattern and detail then turn their artwork into a scroll using string or cardboard tubes.
Teacher video: Scroll making
This Art and design video supports teachers in guiding learners as they bring their Ancient Egyptian scroll designs to life on their handmade papyrus-style paper. The lesson encourages learners to plan the scale and composition of their design, sketch lightly and apply colour and detail with care. Learners are also challenged to reflect on their work and make refinements before adding finishing touches and transforming their artwork into a scroll using string or cardboard tubes.
Learner video: Making paper
This Art and design video demonstrates how to make papyrus-style paper using simple craft materials. The activity encourages learners to layer glued paper strips in two directions to replicate ancient textures while building precision collaboration and preparation skills.
Teacher video: Making paper
This Art and design video demonstrates how learners create their own version of papyrus paper, the first step in producing their Ancient Egyptian scroll. Using brown paper, PVA glue and a layering technique, learners make sheets by overlapping vertical and horizontal strips to replicate the texture of papyrus.
