Read the book, ‘The Little Engine That Could’ by Watty Piper aloud to the class. Encourage the class to join in with the catchphrase, “I think I can, I think I can”, as it appears in the story. After, discuss the following question:

Differentiation
Students needing additional support:
- Could be given a bank of perseverance statements to select one from.
- Could be given sentence starters to help them generate their perseverance statement e.g. “I can…” “I will keep…”.
Students needing additional challenge:
- Could be encouraged to think of long-term goals that require perseverance.
- Should come up with perseverance statements that can apply to multiple scenarios (not just one activity).
