Drawing to show depth

This Art and design video guides learners through the process of adding depth to a drawing using foreground, middle ground and background. Inspired by the work of Elizabeth Catlett, learners revisit their memory drawings and use a variety of lines, patterns and shading techniques to suggest space and distance. They explore how detail and texture can make objects appear closer or further away and how to lead the viewer’s eye around their composition.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Stage 5 Drawing: Expressive drawing and mark making unit, this lesson helps learners develop confidence in using line and mark-making to create the illusion of depth in their drawings.
