Botanical drawing
This Art and design video guides learners through the process of making detailed observational drawings of flowers, inspired by the work of scientists like Carl Linnaeus and Charles Darwin. Using magnifying glasses, learners zoom in on small sections of real flowers, sketching simple shapes and enlarging them to show intricate detail. They are encouraged to explore different parts of the flower, add multiple studies to their page, and include labels or notes like a botanist would.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. As part of the Art and design skills unit, this lesson helps children develop observational focus, drawing accuracy, and an appreciation for the structures found in nature.
