Using light and dark
This Art and design video guides learners as they explore chiaroscuro, the use of light and dark to create dramatic three-dimensional effects. Inspired by the Maya calendar and Renaissance artists, learners use charcoal and masking techniques to transform words into sculptural letterforms. They experiment with highlights, midtones and shadows, learning how contrast can add realism and visual impact.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design curriculum framework. In the Making connections: Maya art unit, this lesson encourages creative decision-making and builds confidence in using tonal contrast for artistic expression.
