Giving commands to computers

This Stage 1 Computing video introduces learners to the idea of computer commands and how they are used to make computers work.

The video explains that commands tell us what to do and how to do it, and that we hear them in everyday life from teachers and families. It shows that commands begin with verbs such as ‘stop’ and ‘listen’ and are used to give instructions. Learners discover that computers also follow commands because they cannot think for themselves. The video explores the different ways we can give commands, including touching a screen, clicking a button, typing text or speaking and reminds learners that computers always follow the instructions they are given, even if those commands are wrong.

This video is part of Kapow’s Computing resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Computing Curriculum Framework (0059). In the Algorithms unplugged unit, this lesson helps learners understand that computers need clear, precise commands to work correctly.
