Four rules of shading

This Art and design video introduces learners to tonal shading and how artists use tone to show light and dark areas in a drawing. Children explore two different pencil grips—detail and shading—and practise creating smooth transitions from dark to light using controlled pressure and consistent direction. The video reinforces four key shading rules to help learners build confidence and control in their sketching.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps learners develop essential drawing skills, understand the concept of tone, and improve their ability to represent form and depth. As part of the Drawing: Tone and texture unit, this lesson supports children in creating more expressive and realistic artwork through careful shading.
