Four rules of shading

This Art and design video teaches children how to use shading techniques to show tone, the lightness or darkness of an area. Pupils practise the four rules of shading: use the side of the pencil, shade in one direction, press evenly and leave no gaps. They explore how adjusting pressure can create smooth tonal transitions and bring depth to their drawings.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design curriculum framework.
