Light and dark

This Art and design video helps learners explore how to use tone and shading to make drawings look three-dimensional. Children observe how light creates highlights and shadows, and learn to map out simple shapes before adding tonal variation. By experimenting with line pressure and erasing to add highlights, they discover how to create form and realism in their drawings.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. As part of the Drawing with Realism: Exploring Tone, Texture, and Proportion unit, this lesson supports learners in developing careful observation and tonal control in drawing.
