Creating balance and contrast

This Art and design video guides learners through the process of creating a piece of Japanese Notan art, a striking style that uses symmetry and contrast. Learners draw, cut and flip shapes from black card to explore positive and negative space in a balanced composition. The activity builds spatial awareness, fine motor skills and an understanding of contrast in visual art.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Making connections: Shadow puppets unit, this lesson introduces learners to the concept of Notan and encourages creative experimentation with shape, balance and symmetry.
