Pinch pots
This Art and design video introduces learners to two essential clay techniques: making a pinch pot and using the score and slip method to join clay pieces. Children learn how to form a pot by shaping clay with their hands and thumb, then practise securely attaching decorations by scoring surfaces and using slip—watery clay that acts like glue. The video encourages creativity while building confidence with hands-on sculptural skills.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps learners develop dexterity, problem-solving and an understanding of key ceramic techniques. As part of the Sculpture and 3D: Clay houses unit, this lesson lays the foundation for more advanced clay modelling by encouraging children to practise, explore and enjoy working with this versatile material.
