Designing abstract motifs with repetition
This Art and design video introduces learners to a simple paper method for creating repeating patterns, inspired by the techniques designers use. Learners begin by dividing a square into four sections, then use colourful paper to recreate and adapt their abstract pattern designs. The activity develops spatial awareness and shows how a small design can be transformed into a larger, repeatable motif.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Stage 4 Craft and design: Fabric of nature unit, this lesson helps children explore repetition and variation in design while reinforcing colour, shape and pattern choices linked to their earlier work.
