Finding form in empty space
This Art and design video guides learners through planning an abstract sculpture by observing and drawing shapes found in and around real-life objects. Learners explore positive shapes (the object) and negative space (the gaps between or around it), then experiment with arranging these shapes on the page. Their drawings help generate ideas for their own abstract sculpture designs.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Stage 3 Sculpture and 3D: Abstract shape and space unit, this lesson encourages creative thinking, spatial awareness and confidence in developing original three-dimensional artwork.
