Three dimensions

This Art and design video guides learners through the process of using tints and shades to make a painted object appear three-dimensional. By observing how light and shadow fall across a simple object, learners draw it onto a grid and apply gradually changing tones to each square. They use a single starting colour, adjusting it with black or white paint to represent light and dark areas, helping their object look more realistic and less flat.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. As part of the Light and dark unit, this lesson builds learners’ ability to mix and apply tone to create depth and dimension in painting.
