What is texture?

This Art and design video introduces learners to the concept of texture by encouraging them to explore how different surfaces feel and how these sensations can be described. Children learn that texture in art can be both real and implied, and that artists use texture to make their work more interesting and expressive. The video invites learners to describe the textures of everyday objects and begin thinking about how to represent them in drawing.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps learners build observation and descriptive skills while laying the foundation for using texture as a creative tool. As part of the Drawing: Tone and texture unit, this lesson helps children connect their senses with their artwork and explore the world around them through touch and visual expression.
