Exploring shading techniques
This Art and design video explains how to introduce children to shading techniques to show tone in their drawings. Learners practise holding their pencils in different ways and learn the four rules of shading: use the side of the pencil, shade in one direction, press evenly and leave no gaps. They explore how light and dark tones help to create form and depth in artwork.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). As part of the Drawing: Developing drawing skills unit, this lesson inspires learners to explore how to blend tones and develop shading techniques.
