Applying skills in clay
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a practical lesson where children apply previously learned clay skills to create a textured tile inspired by the work of sculptor Rachel Whiteread. Children explore both relief—adding clay shapes using the score and slip method—and impressing—pressing tools or objects into the surface to create marks. The lesson emphasises experimentation with shape, texture and form.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps teachers feel confident supporting learners in exploring positive and negative space through hands-on sculptural techniques. As part of the Sculpture and 3D: Clay houses unit, this lesson encourages creative decision-making while building a deeper understanding of texture, pattern and surface design in clay.
