Exploring texture in artwork
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a lesson focused on exploring texture through sensory experience and creative materials. Using a painting by Van Gogh as a starting point, learners use their senses and imagination to consider what different elements (such as the sea, sand and breeze) might feel like. They then use a range of materials to represent those textures, applying them to a photocopy of the artwork to create a tactile response.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). It helps teachers feel confident leading multisensory, expressive activities that encourage learners to experiment with materials and justify their creative choices. As part of the Making connections: Landscapes using different media unit, this lesson builds on learners’ understanding of how texture can be used to bring landscapes to life.
