Calming strategies for managing big emotions
This SEL video introduces a range of practical calming strategies to help students manage strong emotions in the classroom. It explores slow breathing techniques such as finger tracing, counting to ten, soup breathing and balloon breathing, helping students focus on their breath and feel more relaxed.
There are calming activities that support visualisation, sensory regulation and movement, including imagining peaceful places, using calming jars, squeezing and releasing muscles and taking short movement breaks. It highlights the use of calm corners with sensory resources such as fidget toys, sand trays, modelling clay and bubbles.
Students learn that different strategies work for different people and situations. The video reinforces the importance of recognising when emotions feel overwhelming and encourages students to ask a trusted adult for help, supporting emotional regulation and wellbeing.
