Creating contrast with chiaroscuro

This Art and design video supports teachers in introducing learners to the technique of chiaroscuro, which uses light and dark to create dramatic effects. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio, the lesson helps learners understand how contrasting tones can highlight form, add depth or enhance mood in their work. Teachers are guided in supporting learners as they practise and apply shading techniques with purpose.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, developed in alignment with the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Making connections: Maya art unit, this lesson strengthens learners’ ability to make artistic decisions and apply tonal contrast to enrich their visual storytelling.
