Experimental mark making with meaning
This Art and design video supports teachers in guiding learners through an exploratory mark making activity inspired by Maya art and the work of Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Learners begin by researching ancient Maya imagery in their visual journals before experimenting with mark making using handmade tools. The lesson encourages creative risk-taking, helping learners expand their drawing techniques and artistic confidence.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Making connections: Maya art unit, this lesson encourages curiosity, cultural understanding and personal expression through experimental art-making.
