Exploring secondary colours

This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a hands-on, exploratory lesson about colour mixing. Building on prior experience, children revisit primary and secondary colours, experimenting with how varying the amounts of each can create a range of results. Using thinned paint on damp paper fixed in trays, learners observe how colours blend and change when allowed to flow freely—tilting the tray to guide the process.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps teachers feel confident leading open-ended colour investigations that promote observation, collaboration and creative discovery. As part of the Painting and mixed media: Life in colour unit, this lesson encourages children to deepen their understanding of how colours behave and interact in a playful and engaging way.
