Familiar journeys

This Art and design video explains how to encourage learners to explore how maps can be both useful and creative. Children look at different types of maps—both real and imaginary—and then create their own artist’s map based on a familiar journey, such as the route to school. They are encouraged to include interesting details, choose colours, and use a variety of drawing materials to show their personal view of the journey.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps learners understand that maps can be expressive artworks and introduces the idea of representing experiences visually. As part of the Craft and design: Map it Out unit, this lesson forms the basis for further creative work, including felt-making and collage.
