Defining art together
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a lesson that introduces the big question: ‘What is art?’ It encourages learners to begin thinking about art as a discipline and to recognise that art can be made in many different ways by many different people. The video suggests inviting a visitor to share their creative hobby or profession, helping children understand that they, too, are artists when they create things that others can look at and think about.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). As part of the Craft and design: Woven wonders unit, this lesson helps teachers feel confident in leading thoughtful discussions that explore art, craft and creativity. Through conversation, reflection and examples, this unit helps learners develop an appreciation for the diversity of artistic expression and begin to see themselves as part of the wider creative world.
