SEL learning skills: building emotional and social understanding
This video introduces the learning skills unit within the elementary social and emotional learning curriculum. It explains how the curriculum is organised into four key units that progress from kindergarten to fifth grade and are aligned with the CASEL core competencies.
Within the unit you will explore how students develop skills such as recognising and managing emotions, communicating feelings respectfully, working collaboratively and overcoming challenges through a growth mindset. It shows how learning progresses across year groups, from identifying basic emotions in the early years to understanding more complex feelings such as stress in upper grades.
The video also highlights the flexible activities included in each lesson, which can be used during transition times or at home. Overall, it shows how the learning skills unit supports self awareness, self management and positive relationships, helping students build confidence and independence within their school community.
