Creating expressive character sketches

This Art and design video explains how to show children how illustrators create memorable characters by exaggerating and simplifying features. Learners sketch a partner posing as a character from a familiar story, then develop their drawings into expressive comic-style illustrations. They explore facial expressions, body shapes and editing techniques to bring their characters to life.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). As part of the Making connections: Superheroes unit, this lesson inspires learners to apply expressions to illustrate a character.
