Painting over texture
This Art and design video supports teachers in guiding learners through the process of painting over textured collages inspired by Van Gogh’s artwork. Returning to their textured photocopies from Lesson 2, children study Van Gogh’s use of colour and learn how to mix and match similar shades using a selection of primary colours, along with black and white. The lesson focuses on observation, colour mixing, and careful application using both brushes and sponges for textured areas.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps teachers feel confident in teaching colour mixing and painting techniques, while encouraging learners to develop patience, precision and artistic judgement. As part of the Making connections: Landscapes using different media unit, this lesson deepens children’s understanding of how artists build colour and texture to create expressive landscapes.
