Bold painting with colour
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a follow-up lesson on colour, focusing on mixing paints and applying them in response to the work of artist Jasper Johns. Building on the previous lesson using modelling dough, children now explore how to mix secondary colours using primary-coloured paints and apply them in a bold, expressive way. The lesson centres around recreating Johns’s ‘Zero to Nine‘ artwork, encouraging both creative freedom and technical refinement.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). As part of the Painting and mixed media: Colour splash unit, this lesson helps teachers feel confident leading painting activities that develop colour-mixing skills and introduce impasto techniques. Through observation, experimentation and guided critique, this unit encourages learners to analyse an artist’s work and respond with their own vibrant interpretations.
