Creating patterns with printed shapes
This Art and design video explains how to introduce children to the formal element of pattern, encouraging them to explore repeating lines, shapes, tones and colours. Using simple objects like bottle tops and dowels, learners experiment with colour and form to create striking repeating patterns across four printed sheets. They will learn how to vary colour combinations, overprint and layer shapes to achieve visually engaging results.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). As part of the Stage 2 Art and design skills unit, this lesson helps children understand pattern through playful printing, developing observational skills and creativity in their design choices.
