Flexible and supportive SEL lesson design

This SEL video explains how the social and emotional learning programme is structured to fit into busy school timetables while fully covering the CASEL core competencies. Each unit includes five lessons with flexible timings that progress through each grade, from shorter sessions in the early years to longer lessons in upper years.

The lessons are designed to be concise and easy to deliver, using minimal resources. There is a clear lesson structure, including an introduction, main activity and wrap up, as well as additional features that support teachers and reduce workload. These include success criteria written for students, a during the week section to reinforce learning and guidance on adapting lessons to support or challenge learners.

The importance of creating a safe and respectful environment when teaching SEL is shown. It encourages sensitivity around emotions, the use of calm spaces and resources to support self regulation and setting clear ground rules to help pupils feel comfortable sharing and engaging in lessons.
