Seeing like an artist
This Art and design video explains how to teach children to “see like an artist” by observing objects carefully and breaking them down into simple shapes. They explore how sketching lightly with the side of a pencil helps plan and refine drawings. Learners practise observing real-life objects, hunting for geometric and irregular shapes to sketch, focusing on outline and proportion rather than detail.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). As part of the Drawing: Developing drawing skills unit, this lesson inspires learners to recognise and draw the simple shapes they observe in objects.
