Abstracting maps through layered colour

This Art and design video supports teachers in guiding learners through a creative process that transforms a section of their map drawing into an abstract stained glass-style artwork. Inspired by artists who use maps in imaginative ways, learners explore colour, shape and composition as they layer tissue or cellophane on transparent material. The lesson culminates in a collaborative display that reimagines their maps through abstraction.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). It helps teachers confidently lead mixed-media projects while encouraging learners to explore abstraction, colour blending and design thinking. As part of the Craft and design: Map it Out unit, this lesson challenges learners to move from representation to creative interpretation in a collaborative, visually impactful piece.
