Using symbolism to express identity
This Art and design video supports teachers in leading a lesson that blends Maya tradition with modern artistic inspiration. Learners create their own symbolic art based on the concept of the Waiob spirit companions, combining personal symbolism with expressive use of colour and pattern. They are encouraged to reflect on how imagery can represent identity and to develop their own artistic voice using preferred tools and materials.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). In the Making connections: Maya art unit, this lesson fosters creative expression, cultural learning and the development of individual artistic style.
